Optimising farm-made biofertilisers for improved agricultural productivity in the semi-arid regions of Eastern Africa

ATSI is championing development and optimisation of on-farm made biofertilisers for smallholder farmers in the semi-arid eastern Africa. In partnership with the Nelson Mandela African institution of Science and Technology, Arusha and Natural Resources Research Institute of Greenwich University UK, testing of farm-made biofertilisers is currently done in the semi-arid districts of Dodoma and Singida in central Tanzania, Soroti, Pallisa, Amuria and Katakwi districts of eastern Uganda. During the Community of Practice meeting of the McKnight Foundation grantees in Eastern and Southern Africa held in Kisumu Kenya in October, 2025. The Co-Principal Investigator; David Ojuu presented field results that show potential of farm-made biofertilisers from common manure and forest litter resources for improve yield of sorghum and soil microbial functionality.
